Body creams, night creams, and
face oils are the unsung heroes of our makeup bags. Working hard day after day,
they ensure our skin stays fresh, smooth, and moisturised, keeping our make-up
not only looking great, but lasting for hours without becoming cakey.
Unfortunately, not all of us have time to wait for our creams to soak in before
getting ready for work, and the results can be devastating for your clothes.
Greasy stains caused by these creams can become a permanent feature of your
shirts if you don’t act quickly, so grab a suitable laundry detergent and get to work, stat!
What’s in Creams, and What Does it Mean for Our Clothes?
In order to moisturise the skin,
these creams contain large amounts of lubricating ingredients - typically oil
or butter. Makeupholicworld has recently reviewed the Annemarie Borlind
Regeneration Night Cream and L'Occitane Apricot Flower Ultra Rich Body Cream,
the first of which is based on sesame oil, and the second containing 25 percent
shea butter. This means greasy stains on our clothes if we’re not careful.
So what’s the problem with grease?
As you may know, greasy substances such as oils and butters are impervious to
the effects of water. Water simply doesn’t penetrate these substances, instead
just resting on the surface. Try it yourself - coat your hands in hand cream
and put them under running water. You’ll see small balls of water form and roll
off the surface, rather than the water penetrating your skin - it’s like a
protective barrier. Water just isn’t going to cut it here – we’re going to need
something stronger.
What Should I Use?
Believe it or not, although greasy
marks have a reputation as some of the most troublesome stains, all you need is
a good quality laundry detergent! Detergent, along with other household items
such as dishwashing soap and even shampoo, is designed to cut through stubborn
grease, so it works excellently if you get body cream on your collar when
dressing. All you need to do is rub a little detergent directly into the stain,
allow it to sit for a few minutes while the detergent breaks down the oily
particles, and then wash as normal in your machine. Easy!
Timing is Everything!
Well, it’s not quite THAT easy,
unfortunately. If body cream stains aren’t tackled in a timely manner, they can
stick around… Forever! When it comes to removing greasy marks on clothing,
timing really is everything. Get to that stain as soon as possible – it doesn’t
take two minutes to rub some detergent in and pop the garment in the wash, so
don’t be tempted to put it off for longer than you have to. Acting speedily is
the best way to remove body cream stains from your clothing – don’t forget it!
